the twins
In 1980, Sven Dohrow and Ronny Schreinzer decided to form a new band after having played in various groups as a guitarist and drummer, respectively. In the beginning, they drew inspiration from artists such as Tubeway Army, Gary Numan, OMD, and Depeche Mode.
The name “TWINS” might sound a bit funny to English-speaking fans, as Sven and Ronny aren't twins at all (as you’ve probably figured out by now, Einstein), and the name itself isn’t particularly ingenious. The idea behind it was to describe their unique workflow: in fact, no one else is involved in the creation of a TWINS record. Sven and Ronny are the composers, arrangers, musicians, and producers, and they also handle the mixing and mastering of the final product themselves.
Their first single, “The Desert Place,” proved to be a massive dancefloor hit in Germany, and the extended remix version of the track even entered the US Billboard Dance chart in 1981. Their major European breakthrough came when they hit the Italian charts with “Face To Face,” which became one of the best-selling singles in Italy in 1983.
Following the success of “Face To Face,” they returned to the Italian charts multiple times with tracks like “Not the Loving Kind” and “Ballet Dancer.” Thanks to their international momentum, German radio stations began playing their music, and THE TWINS suddenly landed a domestic hit with “Ballet Dancer.” At the time, it was quite rare for a German dance band to find such success in their home country. This was followed by further German chart hits, including “Love System” and “Love in the Dark.”
Due to their massive success, Sven and Ronny formed a live band to satisfy fans who wanted to see them on stage. This gave THE TWINS the chance to prove they weren't just a “one-hit wonder”; according to fans, their concerts were well worth the price of admission. They toured extensively throughout Europe with a five-piece lineup, featuring a drummer whose powerful presence brought an exciting energy to every track. Shortly after, the lineup evolved: since Ronny had been a drummer for many years, THE TWINS made their shows even more dynamic by incorporating two drummers into the performance.
At the end of 1987, after releasing the album “Hold On To Your Dreams,” they were invited to tour the Soviet Union, performing in Moscow and Leningrad. During these 10 concerts, they had the opportunity to play in front of a staggering combined audience of 120,000 people.
After the tour, Sven and Ronny decided to take a hiatus to produce other artists in their own studios. In 1991, THE TWINS staged a comeback by releasing a remix album of their greatest hits titled “The Classics Remixed.” The success of the CD was extraordinary, convincing them that the time was right for a brand-new studio album.
It took nearly two years to complete the next record, as they were determined to make it their best work yet. The album was titled “The Impossible Dream,” and the single “Tonight” successfully brought them back into the charts.
To round out their collection of greatest hits, they released the “12inch Classics” CD in 1994, featuring many of the sought-after extended versions and remixes of their most famous tracks.
In more recent years, THE TWINS have performed several concerts in Germany with a fresh live lineup.
In 2017, Ronny and Sven began producing a new album titled “Living for the Future,” which was released in the summer of 2018.
